I'm Karen Kartrieber and my background is having my own garden maintenance and border design business for almost 20 years. I'm married with a family and the job has been great for flexibility around school holidays and the school run.
My principles have always been organic, working with nature at the forefront of my mind. I had an allotment for 10 years growing vegetables - heritage varieties and soft fruit with a few cut flowers just for my house. Then, as a visit to the Chelsea Flower Show loomed in 2018, I saw an advert for Flowers From The Farm and that they were going to be exhibiting at Chelsea. Their stand became the first thing that I had to see and I was not disappointed! I was then hooked on the idea of growing English cut flowers to sell: a new business was coming!
But I only have a small garden so I asked around for some land to grow on. Eight months later over a meal at my favourite pub, The Plough in Stalisfield, the owners, Richard and Marianne agreed I could use their field. I was over the moon! In Spring 2019 I created eight raised beds for flowers and areas for shrubs - mainly acting as wind breaks as it is very windy at the top of the downs. After some rabbit-proof fencing and irrigation the flowers will be ready for summer, which I hope you'll enjoy.
